Time rolled on, and we moved to a house that had a yard.
After a while my daughter said “I’d like to find another puppy, but this time you help choose it”.
After some discussion and consideration she decided that she wanted a Malamute or similar type pup.
We found it difficult to locate any such pups.
Finally we saw the picture of a pup on a puppy rescue’s website.
They had it labeled as a “Malamute mix”, but remember what was said about puppy descriptions?
At any rate it was definitely a husky of some type.
He was a good looking little guy, but not very responsive, and obviously traumatized by his recent experiences.
All we could find out was that he had been found wandering loose on a Native American reservation in northern New Mexico.
He was estimated about 10 weeks old and had been transported to a puppy rescue near Brighton, Colorado, north of Denver.
The Malamute mix description was clearly a guess, but with no Malamute pups available we decided to bring the little guy home.
My daughter decided to name him Balto after the Disney animated movie of the same name. The movie was based on the story of an actual dog hero in Alaska in the 1920’s.
Little Balto was still traumatized and somewhat withdrawn when settling in to his new home.
He gradually warmed up to his new family and seemingly left his traumatic times behind him.
I remember that for a while, Balto was more interested in establishing his position with Kuma and Toto then with us humans.
I think this may have been some of his extra strong “pack” orientation as a husky breed. Anyone else had experience with a pup like Balto?
